Western Ja gets ready for the Manhattans
published: Thursday | May 13, 2004

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE LEGENDARY Manhattans, which has established a wonderful lyrical relationship with Jamaican fans over the years, will be in Jamaica for the upcoming Labour Day weekend and will be giving performances dubbed 'Labour of Love' at Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Negril.

"It is going to be wholesale excitement as the Manhattans are well loved in Jamaica," said Businessman Tony Cobb, who is part of the group behind the promotion. "We are basically spreading out across the west in a bid to bring the Manhattans closer to more fans."

RICH HISTORY

The history of the Manhattans, which spans close to four decades, is one that is rich in the production of hits songs, which have endeared them to several generations of music fans. Be it the 1970s, '80s or '90s, a search of the Manhattan's impressive catalogue will reveal that they have never gone for any sustained period without having a major hit pounding the airwaves.

For this trip to Jamaica, the 'Mighty Manhattans', as they are often called by their loyal and devoted fans, will be lead by master vocalist Gerald Alston, who booming bass voice is known to give shivers to the ladies. He will be complemented by Wilfred 'Blue' Lovett, Richard 'Rickie' Taylor, Kenneth 'Wally' Kelly and Edward 'Sonny' Bivins.

MUSICAL ECSTASY

In should be musical ecstasy when the Manhattan reels off old crowd favourites such as Kiss and Say Goodbye, Feel So Good To Be Loved So Bad, Hurt, There Is No Me Without You, We've Never Danced To A Love Song, We Made It, Wish You Were Mine, Soul Train, I'm, Not A Runaround, It's So Hard Loving You, The Day The Robins Sung To Me, Falling Apart At The Seams and The Other Side Of Me.

"In thinking of bringing the Manhattans to Jamaica, we decided that we needed to use venues where we could attract both locals and visitors alike," said Cobb. "After careful though, we realise that the Sandals properties would be the ideal choice since they are popular with just about everyone."
