Dawn's confusion, Boyne's insight
published: Sunday | March 28, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THESE ARE merely observations on two articles appearing in The Sunday Gleaner of March 7, 2004.

First the article: 'Raw politics doomed to fail' by the controversial Dawn Ritch. She concludes this article with "Any political regime which operates on the basis of race is doomed to failure and always in the most spectacular fashion."

After reading that article twice, I wonder whether the robust confusion of thought throughout the article has escaped other readers. No wonder it ended with that non-statement. Where has Miss Ritch been all this time while the political regimes of the world have been operating on the basis of race? I for one can only recall Mr. Adolf Hitler being stopped, but what a Herculean task to achieve that!

Could it be that Miss Ritch is overly influenced by the Jamaican motto 'Out of Many, One People' and in the much over-used and vote catching slogan 'All men are created equal?' It is surely not beyond you to think again, Miss Ritch.

Ian Boyne's article on 'Haiti and the US Policy Tragedy' is not one of his best articles in terms of logic, I would submit, but a pragmatic approach nevertheless to the politics of the moment. Ian has tried to rationalise and has helped me to follow the American policy thinking to this thorny problem, this Haitian affair. Thank you, Ian for this help.

Let us be grateful for small mercies like being able to express our opinions for now, but one should ponder what is the point when in human adventure and especially in our present world, 'MIGHT' holds the handle and is always right. The status quo might change over time but only after it has taken its massive toll of human goodness and humanity itself.

I am, etc.,
