The Passion of the Christ
published: Sunday | March 28, 2004

HI FOLKS, I went to see the much talked about movie that was made by Mel Gibson and I don't see what all the fuss is about. It accurately portrays the suffering written about in the Bible. It had the entire theatre audience (including me, big tough back man), sobbing, and all I can say is that I am glad He bore all that for my sins because I would not have the strength to suffer like that for anyone. This is a must-see, whether you are a Christian, Muslim or Hindu.

CRICKET, LOVELY CRICKET?

WHEN THE dust has settled, we hope the management of the West Indies cricket team rues the day they rewarded Lara with captaincy of the team following his blatant and consistent bad behaviour.

As far as I'm concerned, the approach to discipline in our sports teams is a reflection of our approach to overall discipline in the country. We are a bunch of sissies, chickens and lilly-livered men when it comes to taking tough decisions that will affect the little monsters we are famous for creating. And we are experts at closing barn doors long after the horses have escaped. I have asked the missis to try out several dishes made from felt because I am prepared to eat my hat if the cricket board does the right thing this time.

WHAT A RELIEF

I DON'T know about you, but I am certainly relieved to hear that Aristide and his family have an offer of a permanent home in the Motherland. Black people have to look out for their own.

Anyway, since we are noted for studies and commissions of inquiries, we should get a committee to get to the bottom of why poor Haiti has had such a bad history when it comes to leadership. I am one of those who did not want him here, but I understand PJ's plight. The big bad wolf called America, could and would do the same thing to us. So, one of the lessons to be learnt is the importance of regional unity. Meanwhile, we should simultaneously improve the plight of our poor and homeless even as we extend the hand of kindness to strangers. Don't forget that if things continue as they are here at home, we could be another Haiti.

GOOD COPS, BAD FACILITIES

'EYE' WAS returning to the city with her niece recently and the little dumpling urgently wanted to use a bathroom. They stopped at the Ferry Police Station and asked a kind looking middle-aged cop to allow them to use the facility. He complied after apologising for the state of the cubicles and they thanked him and moved on with his good wishes for a safe journey. My friend tells me it is no wonder some of our boys in uniform come out on the street in such a foul mood. The condition of the place was disgusting. Water was running to waste, it could use a proper dose of repair and at least brought up to a respectable standard.

JOB CREATION AWARDS

THE PSOJ deserves credit for their job creation awards initiative. Not many fully grasp the supreme sacrifice it takes for persons like Audrey Marks, Audrey Hinchcliffe, Hugh Campbell, Patrick Terrelongue, Jennifer Samuda and others, to put their money where their mouths are and provide jobs and services for our country. They should be lauded daily, especially as those in high places are crowing about recent foreign reports that we are on a list of top ten business-friendly places. Do you realise that among the reasons we are such an attractive destination for foreign investors, is the ease of hiring and firing? If we are such a businessman's haven, why have so many local businesses closed?

Except for an act of God or some sanity in the green camp, the orange tribes will be making it victorious for the fifth term come next General Elections. I have been saying this for some months now and I think I'm right. 'Ear' tells me that at the recent meeting, the MP launched a string of some colourful words in a verbal confrontation with two of her colleagues. It was not a pretty sight and the lady had to be escorted from the room.

SECRETARY MANAGER

THE PROBLEMS that our Parish Council secretary manager has with those who would put him six feet under down here in my neck of the woods, stem from the fact that the man is an honourable man who refuses to be bought by any stripe. He just won't play ball and you know that doesn't sit well with persons who are not shackled by the law!

PONDER WITH PANDORA

DID YOU all see the front page picture of the Aristides' two little girls? Wouldn't it be great if all little Haitian children looked such a picture of health and happiness?
