THE EDITOR, Sir:
THOSE INTELLECTUALS at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and those in Government, who unfortunately are the lawframers of our country, would do well if they listen to our learned and informed Solicitor General re the decriminalisation of the use of ganja, even in small quantities.
Can't those men see what this disgusting drug is doing great harm to the lives of the young people? As soon as one is hooked, he or she becomes lazy and disorganised.
Some will say alcoholic drinks are just as harmful yet alcoholic drinks and cigarettes are legal to have and use. However, we don't have to add another dangerous one to the list.
I am an old man, few months away from my 80th birthday and I live very close to a basic school. At break time one day recently I heard the little ones playing, 'going to my ganja field'. I almost died. Can't you all use your learning to research ways to alleviate poverty and disease or write educational articles? Is there no fear for God?
Wisdom should protect one from foolish practices and laziness.
Finally, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are noble, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things (Phillipians 4:8).
I am, etc.,
