Shape up, JLP!
published: Sunday | March 7, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LET ME state that I have always been an advocate of a majority of the principles proposed by the Jamaica Labour Party. I admire the leadership style and skills of the Leader of the Opposition, Edward Seaga, and applaud his frankness in situations regardless of the consequences.

I am however, extremely disappointed with the infighting and seeming lack of preparedness of the party to challenge the PNP in the upcoming general election.

As a young professional who is at present disgusted with the Government, I will nonetheless be very discerning in exercising my franchise. It is my opinion that the JLP needs to get their act together and present the party as a viable alternative to the Jamaican people.

If Mr Seaga sees himself as providing the best option as leader of the party then he needs "to clean his house now"! If he thinks the Jamaican people have lost confidence in electing him as Prime Minister (having lost four general elections on the trot) he should resign as soon as possible and assist with the grooming of the incoming leader. This would also provide the voters with sufficient time to familiarise themselves with the leadership qualities and character of the chosen individual.

I am appealing to the members of the JLP to shape up NOW if they are to have any chance of ousting the PNP from Government.

I am, etc.,
