Girls in qualifiers for Western Champs
published: Tuesday | February 17, 2004

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU

TEN FINALS are scheduled for today's eliminations of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association's Girls Western Championships to be held at The Man-nings High School, in Savanna-la-Mar, starting at 9:30 a.m.

The championships will be held over three days, with the boys eliminations being hosted by St. Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) on Thursday and the finals set for the Catherine Hall Sports Complex next Tuesday, February 24.

Mannings are the defending girls champions, while there was a tie between Munro College and Herbert Morrison for the boys' title.

The finals set for today are javelin Open, high jump classes 1, 3 and 4, long jump classes 1 and four, all three discus events and the shot put Open.

Once again STETHS and Mannings are expected to fight it out for the top honours but Lewisville High, who surprised in finishing third last year, could be a factor in the final outcome.

Despite the absence of 400m specialist Maxine Foster, Lewisville's coach Milton Brown has hinted that he could be pulling a few tricks, especially in the middle to long distance events.

ANDERSON GOES FOR 100M/200M DOUBLE

Herbert Morrison's 2002 IAAF World Junior Championships 200m finalists and a national representative for the past three seasons, Nickeisha Anderson, will be competing in her finals Western Champs and could win three titles.

She should repeat her 100/200m double and has a good chance of taking the 400m as well. In her only competitive run over the distance this season, she ran an impressive 56.00 seconds just ahead of STETHS's Sherika Williams, who ran 56.2 seconds and is expected to push Anderson all the way.

Mount Alvernia High, who were fourth last year after being third the previous season, will not take part this season despite some good showings, especially in Class Three in the pre-season. Their absence will open up the door for other teams to score points in that class to boost their tally.

Other teams who will not be taking part are Montego Bay High (which had just one athlete last year), Frome, Cambridge, Grange Hill, Anchovy High, Black River and Lacovia.

Taking their place will be Maggotty, Balaclava, Godfrey Stewart and Newell, which did not take part last year.

The other participants are Hampton, Albert Town, William Knibb, Lacovia, Maldon, Muschett, Rusea's and Green Island.
