Santos clinch mid-season final
published: Sunday | January 4, 2004

Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

"WELL PLAYED Maverley, but Santos is the best team in the Super League," declared Carlton 'Spanner' Dennis after his side emerged 4-2 penalty kick winners over red-hot Maverley/Hughenden in the KSAFA JNBS/Super League mid-season final at Drewsland yesterday.

Both teams ended regulation and extra-time goalless with Maverley/Hughenden having the better of the exchanges in the first half before Santos took the advantage in the second half mainly through live-wire Fabian Nethersole who was introduced at the start of the second stanza.

The heroics of goalie Andrew Sewell throughout the game and wayward shooting from the Maverley/Hughenden strikers, in particular Kevin Eldimire, that aided in the Santos triumph. Gritty custodian Sewell saved penalties from Gaymeon Watkins and Curtis Eldimire in the dreaded shootout while his teammates Adrian Reid, Richard West, Richard Edwards and Nethersole converted from the spot to claim the $100,000 prize.

"It feels great. $100,000 can carry the programme a far way and we need it," Dennis said. "We don't get help from corporate Jamaica but we are going on and we are going to win many more trophies"."
