THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE RT. Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey must be perplexed in his grave and be disgusted at the degraded state of our existence at this time. He worked hard to inspire our improvement and betterment and gave us his philosophy for our socio-economic, cultural, political, spiritual, educational, technological, industrial, and scientific development for our continuous motivation. The said philosophy was tabulated by his loving wife and mother of his children, Mrs. Amy Jaques Garvey.
Mr. Garvey discovered, through divine inspiration, that we lost the unity we enjoyed in Africa through family bonding, and taught us that we couldn't reunite without an organisation. Therefore he established the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) to bring all African people into one unity the world over. This is justified by his statement to the League of Nations, "I am sent by four million members of my organisation to represent four hundred million black people of the world."
Mr. Garvey saw the inadequacy of the socio-economic and commercial programmes under which the Africans existed and the very poor participation, therefore, he established the African Communities League as the commercial and industrial instrument to complement the social, education and cultural programmes of the UNIA and he urged that we must be self-reliant and self-sufficient. Mr. Garvey went on to guide us that wherever we are in the majority, we should be self-governing and so he established the People's Political Party (PPP). After the sensitisation of these institutions for our general welfare, it is extremely disgraceful for the race of African people to be fallen into this depth of darkness that causes us to engage ourselves in this uncivilised, barbaric self destruction of the race.
What is happening in the depressed communities in particular and Jamaica as a whole is outrageously disgraceful when we take into account that Marcus Garvey was born here in Jamaica, and he started his organisational work here in Jamaica for the betterment of black people.
Finally, the officers and members of the UNIA and ACL are now calling upon the governing authority to give clear instructions to our police force, to use all efforts to take in all persons caught with illegal guns alive. That the police should be empowered to penalise and persecute these persons to say clearly where they got the guns from and moreso who is supplying the ammunition.
We are very clear in our minds that these youngsters don't like these guns or gunshots. Most of them are unemployed or underemployed and cannot purchase the guns or the ammunition . However, they are being supplied because they are using it against themselves to maintain racial destruction and retard the prosperity of Jamaica land we love.
