Are you 'metrosexual?'
published: Monday | December 29, 2003

By Nordia Henry, Staff Reporter

ONE USUALLY sees him in the hair-care aisle of a pharmacy carefully checking out the latest hair styling products, or sitting in the hair salon's chair waiting to have his nails buffed to the perfect shine while checking out the latest fashion magazines. No, he's not gay. He is only a man who likes to look his best at all times and that does not only mean having a wardrobe full of designer threads.

He is representative of an emerging breed of men known simply as metrosexuals. A metrosexual man has been defined as a straight, sensitive, well-educated, fashionable young man who is also in touch with his feminine side. He may have a bi-weekly appointment for a manicure and a facial. His hair is styled by a hairdresser rather than a barber and he loves to shop. His bathroom counter is filled with male grooming products and he is a member of a health club where he works out daily to keep his body in prime condition and maintain his washboard abs.

Prime examples of metrosexual men are entertainer and businessman P. Diddy, actors Brad Pitt and George Clooney as well as British football star David Beckham who is said to sometimes embellish his nails with colourful nail polish. There's something very appealing about a guy who's comfortable enough with his own sexuality to enjoy a manicure, pedicure and a facial. Then again, this might just be a response to society's image-obsessed attitude that is now filtering into the male subconscious.

Omar Ferguson, a 19-year-old professional, fits in the category of a metrosexual. He enjoys listening to a wide variety of music, finding out new things about computers, playing basketball and loves to meet interesting people. Ferguson was born and raised in Vineyard Town, East Kingston. He attended Kingston College but a year and a half ago migrated to South England where he is now employed as a Telecommunications Engineer. He is a youngster with serious potential and displays an astute smoothness of class and style. Flair had a chat with him about his grooming regimen and what he does to maintain his good looks.

I LOOK IN THE MIRROR... five times each day for personal interest. If you go out to meet people, you want to look presentable, plus looking good enhances a guy's self-confidence.

I CAN'T LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT... putting a styling product in my hair to prevent it from being ruffled.

I MOISTURISE DAILY BECAUSE... lotion improves the skin texture plus it enhances dry skin.

MY SHOE COLLECTION CONSISTS OF...six pairs of shoes, not counting the many sneakers I have.

I HAVE NEVER TWEEZED, WAXED OR TRIMMED MY EYEBROWS... because I love them the way they are, plus my girlfriend likes them this way.

I HAVE SHAVED/WAXED HAIR... on my chest because it feels more comfortable without them especially when the weather gets very hot. There is also the absence of a bulge under my shirts.

I SPEND... £5, an equivalent of J$500 on a haircut.

MY TOP DRAWER CONTAINS... mainly an assortment of boxer shorts.

THE LAST BOOK I READ WAS... Front. It's a woman's magazine in England. I read woman's magazine because I want to keep up-to-date on the hottest babes of the world, plus see other interesting advertisements.

GOING SHOPPING IS...a top priority because a man must look good and to look good, a man must shop.

THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A FRIDAY NIGHT IS...to watch a hot musical, and then have drinks at a trendy martini bar.

I WOULD DESCRIBE MY SENSE OF STYLE AS ...comfy and casual because I buy whatever I feel comfortable in. Not anything that makes me look overdressed but clothes that accentuate my features and leave me looking elegantly casual.
