'St Bess' students advised to become well-rounded
published: Wednesday | November 26, 2003

SANTA CRUZ, St. Elizabeth:

Managing director of Trevor Hamilton & Associates, Dr. Trevor Hamilton, has advised students in St. Elizabeth, "to create their own opportunities for success, to have vision and to have confidence in themselves."

"Every successful person I know has vision and confidence in themselves," Dr. Hamilton said, addressing a group from schools across the parish at a student 'Career Day' at the St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) over the weekend.

Speaking on the topic wealth creation Dr. Hamilton, who is also a director of the St. Elizabeth Homecoming Foundation Limited, urged the students to be selective in their career choices.

"Technology is changing fast these days so you will need to be multi-skilled in order to be successful in this global economy," he said.

In recommending some career choices to the students, Dr. Hamilton told them to avoid taking up careers in government institutions. Instead he encouraged them to look towards the travel industry, hospitality, tourism and repair services.

"Travel and hospitality will boom, and tourism and health services is going to grow," he said.

He also advised students to choose someone to emulate.

"You should have a role model and if you want to be successful in life you must choose to be around successful people," he said.

The Career Day was held as a part of the St. Elizabeth Homecoming Foundation month of activities, which is held each year in November.

Institutions that participated at the career day seminar included the University of the West Indies, the Jamaica Defence Force, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, the Meteorological Service, Jamaica Constabulary Force, the University of Technology and The Gleaner Company.
