The state of crime
published: Wednesday | November 26, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PEOPLE OF all walks of life in Jamaica are bemoaning the state of crime, poverty, disunity, political tribalism, extortion, etc. in our country Jamaica. There have been all kinds of commissions, advisors, suggestions, plans, you name it, but things continue to get worse.

We blame politicians, churches, business people and every other group and person we can find but things continue to get worse. The opposition parties think that if they were in power things would have been better. But would it?

We do not seem to understand the real root of the problem. God, the sovereign Lord, promised many thousands of years ago through Isaiah the Prophet (Isaiah 3:10-11) that it shall be well with the righteous but it shall be disaster for the wicked. Every empire and nation in history that has suffered calamity was because of wickedness.

Since we are wicked as a nation and we are suffering calamity because of divine retribution and the natural effects of our sins, just as God has promised in Isaiah 3:11, would it not make good sense to repent and begin to be righteous and experience the blessings just as God has promised?

There is no government or human messiah who can deliver us at this time. Those who are looking to any person or group for deliverance are simply deluded.

The nation, its leaders and inhabitants need to repent now. This means a change of mind, a change of attitude, a change of practice towards Jesus Christ. It is turning from the path of moral and spiritual decadence that we are in and serve Christ. The future of this nation depends on this.

I am etc.,

SEATON WILSON (Rev.)
