Widening the gap
published: Tuesday | November 25, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS said that a picture says a thousand words. For some time now I have read in the press where the beneficiaries of the present system (and those who will soon be beneficiaries) are upset with the recent decision to divert government funding from tertiary to primary education.

I always meant to write a response to these individuals, especially the ones who have profited from the deprivation of their less fortunate Jamaicans, yet are now contributing to the further development of the developed countries and the widening of the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'.

Last week, I came across your photo of two girls who were finally able to read after being exposed to a properly funded and structured primary programme, and were given a chance to realise their dreams where none had existed before.

And then, it occurred to me...I had nothing to say.

I am, etc.,
