MultiCare helping kids
published: Tuesday | November 4, 2003

CATERING FOR children aged six to 18 years, the MultiCare Foundation programmes allow our young people to feel good about themselves through their achievements, building their confidence and self-esteem. Emphasis is on the building of character, and the encouragement of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and understanding among children from diverse communities and different backgrounds.

In the words of chairman, Dr. Aaron Matalon O.J., "The MultiCare Foundation is aimed at reversing the cycle of demoralisation among our youngest citizens."

In keeping with its mandate, the MultiCare Foundation seeks to ensure that our young people see themselves beyond the limitations of their street corner and their communities, helping them to realise that they are global citizens with a valuable role to play in Jamaica and the wider society.

The MultiCare schools are located in east, west and central Kingston and Greater Portmore. Twenty of our 31 schools are located in the inner-city communities of downtown Kingston, from Norman Gardens, Windward Road, and Dunoon Park in the east, to Rae Town, Southside, Franklyn Town, Victoria Avenue and East Queen Street, Whitfield Town, Denham Town, 'Payne Land', through to Balcombe Drive and Olympic Way in the west.

Through the Visual Arts Programme, children are given hands-on experience in a variety of artforms including painting, papier mache, screen printing, ceramics and basketry.

DISCIPLINE, RESPONSIBILITY, SELF-ESTEEM

The annual inter-schools sporting competitions focus on the fundamentals of discipline, responsibility, self-esteem, love and respect for self and others, and personal hygiene. The performing arts programme provides professional training in dance and music for children.

Summer programmes are held annually to provide children with a safe healthy environment for productive activities during the long summer holidays, and to provide a link between the closing of the school year in June and the start of the new school year in September.

The MultiCare Foundation was established in 1993 as a private non-profit organisation committed to youth and community development.

Endowed by Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited, Caribbean Cement Company Limited and ICD Group Limited, the MultiCare Foundation has sought to improve the quality of life for young Jamaicans, in particular children from the inner-city communities of downtown Kingston.

Now in its 10th year, the MultiCare Foundation is celebrating with the theme 'Building Tomorrow, Today'. Over the years, the MultiCare Foundation has launched several community initiatives. Most significant has been the development of the MultiCare's outdoor sports and recreational complex, the Breezy Castle Centre in downtown Kingston. Hosting a variety of civic and community events, the centre is now established as a neutral playing field for Kingston's inner-city communities. The Breezy Castle Centre is a reaffirmation of the MultiCare Foundation's commitment to the redevelopment of downtown Kingston.
