Assistance needed to start education fund
published: Tuesday | November 4, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with interest the report by your Teino Evans on "Early childhood teachers...". My mother - who was a teacher before she got married and devoted herself to being a full-time housewife - established and ran a Basic School in the Duhaney Park area of St. Andrew.

This school won many awards from the Ministry of Education and earned the respect of residents in the area. She was called to higher duties ten years ago and I have been thinking of how I could memorialise her efforts and dedication to early childhood education.

The plan I have in mind is to contribute (say J$100,000) to a fund in her memory, to be administered by two or three trustees, to assist worthy and deserving basic school teachers in acquiring the basic requirements of entering "the specialised programme at teachers colleges and university."

I will appreciate any guidance you can give as to the approach I should adopt to make this a reality.

I am, etc.,
