New twist to suicide case
published: Saturday | October 25, 2003

POLICE PROBING what had first appeared to be a case of suicide, have now turned their attention to investigating a possible homicide.

Reports are that on September 10 of this year, 23-year-old Aldonna Harris, formerly of the University of Technology, was found in her bedroom, at Pinnacle Close, Pembroke Hall, Kingston, lying in a pool of blood.

She reportedly died from a single bullet wound to the side of her head. It is alleged that she was discovered clutching a gun that was assigned to her children's father, a Detective Constable attached to the CIB Headquarters in downtown Kingston.

Further allegations are that the policeman who was visiting Ms Harris' home at the time, told investigators in his preliminary statement that he fell asleep and was awakened by a loud explosion. Ms Harris was found lying on the ground.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Granville Gause, of the Bureau of Special Investigation (BSI), said although the investigations are incomplete, both the victim and the policeman's hand were swabbed for gun powder residue, but the forensic results have returned negative.

There is no evidence to suggest that it was Ms Harris who took her own life as handwriting experts also confirmed that a suicide note found at the crime scene, was not written by Ms Harris.

Parts of the note had bid farewell to a number of persons, telling them how sorry she was to end her life in that way.

Prior to her death, Ms Harris had broken off the relationship with her children's father, marrying another man five weeks earlier.

Information reaching The Gleaner are that the file is expected to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Kent Pantry, by the end of next week, for him to make a ruling on the matter.
