A GOLD medal for bravery was awarded to Charles Sterling, a senior citizen of Baccas Wood in Islington for his selfless act of heroism.
On April 16, he risked his life by entering a burning house and saved an infant.
He suffered third degree burns and was hospitalised. He is now somewhat deformed because of his ordeal, but was able to walk to the podium at a ceremony in St. Mary to receive his medal.
He was among a record 22 persons honoured at the National Heroes Day Celebrations & Awards function on October 20 at the Claude Stewart Park in Port Maria.
The ceremony had a new addition this year, with awardees receiving gold, silver and bronze medals, along with short citations.
Twelve persons were awarded with gold medals for excellence, five of whom were teachers. They were hailed for making invaluable contributions, and for unbroken and dedicated service in the field of education and community development.
SPECIAL MENTION
Special mention was made of Bruce Wedderburn, a graduate of the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts and three-time gold medallist in the JCDC Gospel competition.
He was awarded for his contribution as a teacher, musician, composer and music adjudicator in the national and regional JCDC competitions. He was also awarded for being the most innovative teacher in 2001 when he wrote the school's song for St. Mary Technical High. Three other teachers were awarded with silver medals for distinction in their fields.
A total of eight persons received silver medals for service in the field of community development and social Services. Two persons were awarded with bronze medals.
The presentations were made by Mayor Robert Montague, before a number of parish officials and citizens.
