Historic recognition for heritage workers
published: Tuesday | October 14, 2003

By John Myers, Jr. Staff Reporter

SEVEN INDIVIDUALS and organisations were honoured by the Jamaica Historical Society (JHS) on Friday, for their contribution to the preservation and promotion of Jamaica's historical treasures.

Those honoured were Laura Facey, Evangeline Clare and Margurite Curtin, Anthony Gambrill, George Lechler, Glory Robinson, the Institute of Jamaica and The Gleaner Company.

Laura Facey was acclaimed for "a lifetime of active practice" in the preservation of the culture of Jamaica, by Doreen Thompson, chairman of the executive committee of the Ward Theatre Foundation. She said Mrs. Facey's focus was particularly on "residential buildings from historic plantation houses to contemporary and modern town apartments."

In honouring The Gleaner, JHS president, Professor Patrick Bryan, hailed the institution for its role in highlighting and recording the island's historical past.
