Bras and breast cancer
published: Tuesday | October 14, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DURING MY childhood days very many women went without wearing what seems to hold up their tits and offer some support, called brassieres. Only a few women could afford them, or corsets.

I remember viewing the women of those days sitting over a washpan with their tits bare and hanging down before them and which didn't seem to bother them. There would be displayed in books, women of Africa and other parts of the world, bare without brassieres. I remember even films with dancing belles jumping and prancing without bras. There wasn't much talk about "breast cancer" then.

Brassieres are not just for the comfort of carrying the breasts but also to provide the wearer with an attractive appearance to her male folks.

I am of the opinion that brassieres contribute to the affliction of breast cancer. A lot of these ailments that haunt human beings are brought on by artificially
adopted habits. Moreover women with breast cancer are mostly those who have been wearing bras over a period.

I am, etc.,

K. W. WILLACEY

Kingston
