The nightmare continues
published: Tuesday | October 14, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHY CAN'T we all just get along? I noted with some amusement, and a great deal of frustration the backlash that has resulted from Kingsley Thomas' call for a state of emergency. I am not sure if a state of emergency is the solution to the violence in our country, but rather than dismiss the idea, Seaga and the JFJ should be more open and receptive to suggestions.

I applaud Mr. Thomas for his courage in speaking up. His call illustrates that in spite of the seeming apathy that exists towards finding a solution for crime and violence in our country, someone is prepared to stand up and be counted. As the saying goes, "if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem". Rather than attacking Mr. Thomas, he should be supported, as per Ms. Frankson of the JMA. The NHT chairman has highlighted in his own way what the citizenry need to do en masse in order to curb the prevailing violence. They must put forth solutions and demand action from the laissez-faire politicians who seem to be only concerned with maintaining power by any means.

I salute you, Mr Kingsley Thomas, and trust that your call will be the stimulus that sparks change. Unfortunately, I am not optimistic because I have had this dream before but the nightmare continues.

I am, etc.,

L. WATSON
