J'cans need decent jobs
published: Sunday | September 28, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I'M AN American citizen who comes to Jamaica often. I just read your Sunday article by Phyllis Thomas "Use DJs, media to take guns off street".

She points out that there are a lot of poor people in Jamaica. Until your economy is such that it can sustain jobs for people to enable them to make a decent living your crime rate will continue.

It's not fair to take weapons from people who have them for security purposes. We have a saying in this country and it goes like this "if guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns".

I personally am holding off on coming back to Jamaica until I read where conditions improve. The greedy hotel owners and rich tourist businesses might start by paying a Jamaican a decent wage. US$50 a week is hardly decent. There also needs to be some initiative that creates jobs for all Jamaicans. I've never seen a place where so many people have to beg.

I am, etc.,

DAN JACOBS
