Man sentenced, fined for breaching Road Traffic Act
published: Saturday | August 30, 2003

MIGUEL BAILEY, 22 years old of Waterloo District in St. Catherine, was fined over $34,000 and given a 12-month suspended sentence, after pleading guilty to breaches of the Road Traffic Act, in the Spanish Town RM Court on Tuesday.

Investigating officer, Osbourne Fearon, told the court that on August 12 this year, about 1:00 p.m., Bailey drove away a car he was given to wash, hitting another vehicle along the Greendale main road. He fled the scene in the car and was chased by a motorcycle policeman, who caught up with him and instructed him to stop. Instead of obeying, he hit the officer off his bike, resulting in the car crashing on the embankment. He then jumped out of the car and ran.

When he appeared in the Spanish Town RM Court, he pleaded guilty and was fined $10,000 or 6 months for having no driver's licence, $20,000 or 6 months for dangerous driving, $3,000 or 30 days for having no insurance, $1,500 or 10 days for failing to report an accident. For driving away the vehicle without owner's consent he was sentenced to 12 months suspended for 2 years. He was also suspended from getting a driver's licence for the next 12 months.

He received a stern warning from RM Lorna E. Gayle that he should keep the peace, especially for the next 2 years.
