Shameful the way we hate our own people
published: Saturday | August 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS being bandied about that people in Mountain View Avenue area are being pressured because of the way they voted in the last election. Mr. Editor, I would submit to you that what we are experiencing in some communities in Jamaica is SLAVERY which is being orchestrated by black gunmen. Those who are going about forcing people to vote for their choice of candidate do not understand the value of democracy and perhaps will not appreciate the value until some dictator takes over the helm of the country.

What kind of freedom exists when a community is constantly under curfew? When one cannot discuss politics or economics freely? According to the concise Oxford Dictionary, a democracy is a form of society ignoring hereditary class distinctions and tolerating minority views. I would like to ask those who are going about intimidating others to remember that most of us came here on the same slave ship. It is shameful the way we hate our own people. We talk about racism in Jamaica but yet I do not see people of other races killing black people in Jamaica.

One of the ways we can reduce the level of crime is to establish cameras or some satellite system on Mountain View Avenue and its environs as well as other crime-prone areas. The Crime Management Initiative should lobby the Government in this regard. I am sure all law-abiding citizens will welcome this move and all those who do not wish to be watched can move to Mars.

In the same way our foreparents overcame slavery we the current law-abiding citizens will overcome some day.

I am, etc.,
