Letter Of The Day - Sleeping through nightclub noises?
published: Saturday | August 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT'S 1:40 on a Thursday morning and instead of sleeping, I'm writing this letter to The Editor. Believe me, I want to sleep; I even took a sleeping aid. But the noise from Weekendz Night Club and Priscilla's Night Club invades my right to the basic liberty of sleep.

If you own property in the area where these nightclubs are located, you should be very afraid. I'm a tenant, I'm actively looking to relocate. So will countless other tenants. Property values will fall as they did in the Red Hills area.

The Constant Spring police have taken an interest in this problem but they are faced with a Jamaican law that allows nightclubs to play up to 4 o'clock in the mornings with the stipulation that they lower the music volume at 2 a.m.!

Well, should we thank our lawmakers for small mercies? Are our lawmakers serious about encouraging production in this country?

It is fair to assume that most people in the Corporate Area have to be up by 6 a.m. in order to get to their jobs on time. If nightclubs have the legislative right to prevent sleep until then, it means the rest of us have what... less than two hours to sleep?

And, just suppose for argument's sake, the nightclubs would really turn down the music volume at 2 a.m., the rest of us have what...less than four hours until 6 a.m.?

Lawmakers, you need to set this situation right. I shouldn't have to move.

P.S. I hear there is a stipulation for nightclubs to turn down the music at 12:30 a.m. on weekdays. Yeah, right!

I am, etc.,

CECILE WILLIAMSON
