Barrow THE SUPREME Court yesterday ruled in favour of Cable & Wireless Jamaica Limited in the suit brought against the company by Oceanic Digital Jamaica Limited.
Oceanic Digital had filed the suit after Cable & Wireless took steps to prevent Oceanic from illegally terminating incoming overseas traffic on C&W's network.
C&WJ's President Gary Barrow, said he welcomed yesterday's decision not as a victory for Cable & Wireless but rather as a victory for an orderly process of liberalisation in the telecommunications industry.
Mr. Barrow added that Cable & Wireless has demonstrated its willingness to facilitate competition in the industry within the country's existing laws and regulations. He appealed to all players in the sector to abide by these laws and to honour binding agreements. He pointed out that failure to do so will result in chaos in the industry.
AGREEMENTS
As proof of C&W's willingness to facilitate competition, Mr. Barrow said that his company had already signed 17 international interconnect agreements, including one with Gotel Communications, the only other company along with C&W, providing land line services in Jamaica.
He said that, notwithstanding yesterday's ruling, C&W stands ready to work with Oceanic Digital, especially recognising the investments they have made in Jamaica, as well as with all other bona fide licencees in the market.
