Gov't allocates $100m to purses
published: Friday | June 13, 2003

THE GLEANER has learnt that the Government has allocated $100 million to the horseracing industry for purses up to March 2004.

The decision was made late Wednesday afternoon and relayed to Laurence Heffes, president of the Jamaica Racehorse Owners Association who, along with other racing associations at Caymanas Park, formed a united front in an effort to press the Government for increased purses.

This marks the first time since 1998 that purses have been upgraded.

The purses will be distributed by Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) following consultations with representatives of the various stakeholders. The level of increase represents 40 per cent.
