A different approach
published: Friday | June 13, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WISH to commend the Commissioner Forbes and the Minister Phillips concerning using external investigators to examine the recent killings in upper Clarendon. We may reasonably argue that this should have occurred earlier. I take the view that it is better late than never and it may be the beginning of something new and different.

Minister Phillips has correctly pointed out that this is common practice in other jurisdictions and amongst best practices carried out by most modern police departments. This approach serves two main purposes. In the first instance, people will come to believe that investigations into police killings are unbiased and on the other hand serve to exonerate police personnel where such killings are justified.

I am, etc.,
