Illegal hiring will get us nowhere
published: Friday | June 13, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM very pleased that someone has finally decided to take a closer look at illegal employment in Jamaica. Too frequently we employ foreigners and pay them an arm and a leg and our own who in most cases are more qualified are not considered.

As mentioned by the Minister, employers need to ensure that there is no one qualified enough in Jamaica before looking overseas. This is done in the UK and I would like to think that it is done in other developed countries and since we seem to copy everything else it is about time that we copied something that will take us forward.

If we take a step in this direction, this might see many of our gifted and talented returning home or staying at home instead of looking for greener pastures, thereby contributing to our all round growth and development.

I am, etc.,
