COTTBUS, Germany, CMC:
JAMAICAN MULTIPLE Olympic and World Championship relay medallist Danny McFarlane won the men's 400 metres at the Cottbus Permit Meeting on Wednesday night.
McFarlane timed his run well and stopped the clock at 45.72 seconds, defeating Ireland's Tomas Coman and European champion Ingo Schultz of Germany.
On a very hot day with temperatures reaching well above 30 degrees Celsius, American Chris Philipps, taking the 110-metre hurdles in 13.35 seconds and local star Astrid Kumbernuss landing the shot put with 19.56 metres were among the top performers.
Schultz led the first half of the men's 400 metres but could not withstand McFarlane's challenge and faltered in the homestretch.
Coman (46.06) and Schultz (46.10) took second and third respectively behind McFarlane, who was a finalist in the individual 400 metres at the Sydney Olympic.
He was a bronze medallist in the 4x400 metres in Sydney, and also landed relay medals at the 1995, 1997 and 1999 World Championships, as well as the World Indoor Championship in Birmingham three months ago.
