DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Hydel Prep snared the lead after the first day of competition in the Nestle-sponsored Inter-Prep Schools Track and Field Championships at G.C. Foster College yesterday.
Hydel, after four finals, have 35.5 points. They are followed by Mona - 18, Mavisville - 16.5, Vaz - 16, Our Lady of the Angels - 15.5 and Ardenne -13, who round off the top six.
The highlight of yesterday's opening day was the Class One boys' high jump where Kemar Lewis of Hydel and Jonathan Reid of Mona equalled the record of 1.60m held by Alan Bailey, formerly of Mona, and Shawn Mills of Vaz. However, it was Lewis who took the gold with silver going to Reid, while Christopher Waugh of Hydel and Machelle Baker of Stella Maris both tied for third with 1.51m.
Hydel also captured the girls' long jump final where Arianne Hammond finished with a leap of 4.05m. Mona took second through Lorie Ann Foster with an effort of 4.03m.
In the other finals yesterday, Andrene Wells took the long jump Class One girls' title with a leap of 4.74m, while the high jump Class Two boys' went to Stanley Sutherland of Stella Maris with 1.36m.
Hydel looked very good in the qualifying events yesterday as most of their athletes have qualified for second-round action.
Today's competition begins at the same venue at 8:30 a.m.
