How to grow J'can economy
published: Friday | June 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHY ARE we, in Jamaica, trying to re-invent the wheel? We have seen some of the most successful countries in the world, namely the United States of America and Germany, reduce the rates of taxation in the interest of GROWING their eco-nomies (and they have not been doing as badly as we have).

We have just seen the European Union cut their interest rates by a further 0.5 per cent to two per cent in the interest of aiding their economies to GROW.

Why is it that the powers that be, in our most beautiful country, believe that it is in OUR interest that the burden of taxation should be increased and that interest rates should be as high as they are. Is it that we do not have the ability to look at what it is that the successful countries do and emulate it?

OR is it that the people who are running our country believe that the wheel that we are running on is fine, it is only flat at the bottom!

I am, etc.,

PETER JOHN THWAITES II
