No Reneto, more crime
published: Friday | June 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

NOW THAT the Crime Management Unit has been dismantled, and SSP Adams relegated to desk duties, one thing is definite for certain: heightened criminal activities!

Certainly, Mr. Adams and his special team had erred on a few missions; however, the very mention of his name had driven fear into the hardest of Jamaica's miscreants!

Without the physical presence of such a tough cop and his team on the streets of these crime-infested neighbourhoods, the criminal elements will receive the message that is sent by Mr. Forbes: it is now open season on crime islandwide!

In the past, we've seen where other top cops have made significant dents in organised criminal activities... a few names that spring to mind are 'Bigga Ford', 'Karate Georgie', 'Trinity', 'Laing', 'Frog-Back', just to name a few.

Those mentioned: outstanding. Yes, they were; however, they had their share of controversy. Be that as it may, the criminal elements within the Jamaican society must be dealt with by officials from the law enforcement fraternity!

Just last week, an officer who was appointed to uphold the laws of the land did so at the cost of his life! He was callously murdered by assailant/s unknown until now! Mr. Forbes must realise that in an attempt to rid Jamaica of criminals, he has to fight fire with fire, literally!

Certainly, he has seen in-stances where criminals have expressed total disregard for law enforcement officials on several occasions. SSP Adams rose to the challenges of doing his part in ridding society of these scourges amongst us, and the thanks he received from his superiors... not even a formal notice indicating that he was relegated to less interactive policing.

In order for gun-related crimes to cease, Jamaica must take control of the ports! Jamaica manufactures neither guns nor ammo! Recently, there was a discovery of weapons at one of our wharves, carefully concealed in an air compressor... just goes to show the extent to which smugglers will go in order to get these weapons into the island!

Vigilance needs to be priority! Get Mr. Adams and a whole lot more Adamses out on the streets of Jamaica!

I am, etc.,
