Construct a new stadium

THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN THE debate on Jamaica's bid to host many of the games for the 2007 International Cricket Conference World Cup, I am suggesting to the Government that it invests the people's money in a new stadium instead of upgrading Sabina Park.
There is the National Stadium, which is basically for track and field, even though it has a cycle track, and to stage soccer games. Sabina Park, a privately-owned facility, is for cricket.
Now we need a world class facility for soccer. The Govern-ment should invest in this facility with a 50,000 maximum capacity. This should be ready in time for the 2007 World Cup. After the World Cup, it should then be used primarily for soccer, for local and international games, including pre-season training of some top teams in the world.
Sabina Park, in the meanwhile, could be renovated to stage some of the World Cup cricket games with Government-guaranteed funds, if necessary.
The location of this stadium should be in the vicinity of the Highway 2000 project, or the North Coast Highway to aid easy access and nearby hotel accommodation. In this way, we will be complementing the country's existing infrastructure and have a useful facility for some time in the future.
