Really annoying
published: Tuesday | April 22, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

RECENTLY, I was driving along Corletts Road in Spanish Town and came across a situation that was really annoying. Right in the vicinity of a club, some murals were being painted on a wall and some citizens of the area took it upon themselves to place chairs on the roadway that is about twelve feet wide and designated for dual vehicular traffic to watch the murals being done, causing me to drive on the right side of the road meant for cars coming in the opposite direction.

I have noted with much disgust, that in other areas, the residents are prone to abandon their bicycles in the middle of the streets, stop their brethren, who park their SUVs, Mark II, Lexuses, Escalades and other such high-profile vehicles in the middle of the streets to say hello or have lengthy conversations or they themselves congregate in the middle of the street to discuss the latest of whatever is current in their mundane lives.

You dare not blow but must wait until they are through with their transaction or you will be bombarded with a litany of expletives. Daily, many motorists' lives are at risk because if you make the mistake of hitting even their dogs, who coincidentally have developed the same habits as their owners, you stand the chance of being mobbed and possibly murdered because you dare to "diss" them or their pets.

I would like to make a plea to these residents, and their posses who visit with them regularly or occasionally, to please, have some consideration for us motorists: use sidewalks where they exist, or congregate in a manner that allows free passage for motorists and encourage your friends to park their bikes and cars in a fashion that also permits free passage. We too have business to attend to and places to go to and we cannot afford to waste time.

I am, etc.,

NOEL A. PENNANT
