Another waste of taxes?
published: Tuesday | April 22, 2003

THE EDITOR: Sir,

I TRAVEL daily from St. Thomas to Kingston. I have to pass by the old Goodyear Factory in Morant Bay. A part of this building was recently refurbished to be used as an Information Technology Centre. This would provide needed jobs for people as announced by Minister of Information and Technology, Phillip Paulwell. To date there is no sign of activities taking place at the facility. The compound is over-run with "bush and shrubs". The newly constructed car park is empty.

The only sign of life is the lone security guard posted at the entrance gate to the facility, and goats grazing at the unkempt and "grassy lawn". Whenever St. Thomas is slated for economic development, the political directorate is "hell bent" in stalling or abandoning such project. St. Thomas is classified as an "Agriculture Parish". Is this the reason why any form of development slated for St. Thomas away from agriculture is not given urgent or serious consideration? Is this another waste of taxpayer's money? Over to you, Mr. Minister.

I am, etc.,

ROY CRUICKSHANK
