Two men view the wreckage of the 40-ft trailer, laden with Bunker 'C' Oil, which overturned, causing an oil spill on the North Coast Highway yesterday. - Janet Silvera/Freelance Photographer ENVIRONMENTAL AND marine officers were working feverishly last night to contain a major oil spill on the Long Hill main road, Montego Bay, in the vicinity of the Reading Reef Club.
A 40-ft trailer laden with Bunker 'C' oil (engine oil) was travelling down Long Hill, in Montego Bay, when the driver lost control on approaching the stoplights at the Reading crossing on the North Coast Highway. The vehicle went across the road, turned over and crashed into the newly-built walls of sections of the Reading Reef Club.
The driver, Calvin Daley, of DRW Transport of a Kingston address, was reportedly in a serious condition in the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
Franklyn McDonald, chief executive officer at the National Environmental and Planning Agency (NEPA), told The Gleaner last night that as a result of the quick work of the small NEPA and Coast Guard team flown in from Kingston, the oil was prevented from entering the sea.
"The oil was contained in the culverts and drain... and as a precaution the area was boomed off and the road sanded... every effort is being made to pump off the oil. We are monitoring the situation and, if it doesn't rain, the oil can be recovered from the blocked drain," he said.
He also indicated that the police and the National Works Agency (NWA) were working along with the team to contain the oil spill.
