A rogue country
published: Friday | April 4, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

UNCLE SAM has a long, but very sinister history, of making sure that non-white countries, especially, toe the line or else! To name a few 'Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan; Lumumba, Congo; Vietnam; Noriega, Panama and now Saddam Hussein, Iraq.

The United States of America has often proved that it is a rogue country, with its kith and kin in toe - the likes of England and Spain that commit atrocities or even genocide on certain countries in the name of democracy. These three rogues together, refuse to adhere to the rules and regulations, laid down by the United Nations, and took it on themselves, to sanction and start this war. They also show disrespect for the office of Secretary General of the UN perhaps, because that Secretary-General is a black man - Kofi Annan.

Good for you Mr. Patterson, you have not said anything wrong or out of context, and if for some childish reason, Uncle Sam does see the need to cut off aid to this little rock, so be it. This might just be the right time, for such a thing to occur because those superpowers, keep us in financial bondage and poverty.

Mr. Patterson, our Prime Minister, and many other like-thinking Jamaicans and foreigners believe that a 'case was not made for war'. A person's conscience usually determines his or her thoughts. We live in a world of diplomacy, but we don't all have to be hypocrites.

It is time now for even us, small, impoverished and suppressed nations, to shrug off that stranglehold grip, that Uncle Sam and like countries have on us. It should make us work harder, to become more self-reliant, self-sufficient, and more productive. The truth sometimes offends, it might also be a disadvantage and disastrous, but God knows, it is the right thing to do.

I am, etc.,
