THE EDITOR, Sir:
DECLARING WAR on illicit narcotics is the way to go Mr. Munroe, but the infection has gotten much deeper. The Honourable Peter Phillips seems to believe that there is no consumption of cocaine in Jamaica. He is spending money on getting the latest crime-fighting arsenal to supposedly battle the transshipment dilemma and the drug gangs.
This strategy alone will not solve this epidemic, it will only keep the armed forces and the politicians busy and looking like they are doing something. Mr. Phillips the cocaine epidemic has gotten into every nook and cranny of our little island. You have to broaden your scope, look further than the Corporate Area.
In almost all small towns and districts throughout Jamaica, there are crack houses that are being supplied by people we would not expect. These crack dens are selling crack for J$30 a rock to idlers. These individuals then turn on their communities robbing and stealing to support their habit.
But there is a greater reason for the rise in crime throughout the island. Lack of education is depriving our people of their God-given rights. Education empowers our people to be who and what they can be and to have pride and self esteem. Education makes people aware of the dangers of drugs. Education empowers people to help themselves and in turn uplifts ones country.
