STUDENTS ON the north coast now have a chance to have their suggestions about ways to improve the tourism sector being heard.
Sandals Ocho Rios has launched a Schools Tourism Essay Competition aimed at high, junior high and all-age schools in St. Ann, St. Mary and Trelawny.
Speaking at a special function marking the launch at the resort recently, general manager, Michael Darby, noted his organisation considered the suggestion of the students important as they were the future managers of the industry.
He said the hotel was launching the competition at a critical juncture in the current season, especially with the advent of war in Iraq.
Mr. Darby said Sandals Ocho Rios was pledging its continued support to the education system and would continue its drive to bring tourism views to the schools.
Public relations manager, Ian Spencer, said the resort had a comprehensive Tourism in Schools project, visiting a number of schools islandwide and encouraging students to look towards it as a career. Many schools were also touring the property and being hosted at information seminars there.
The essay competition is in two age categories: 12-14 and 15-17. The junior topic is: "What are some of the major benefits that Jamaica derives from tourism" and for the elder age group "What measures could the Minister of Tourism put in place to increase tourist arrivals to Jamaica".
Closing date for entries is Wednesday, April 9, and the winners will be announced on Wednesday, April 23.
Prizes will include weekends at Beaches Resorts, trophies, plaques, certificate and surprise packages.
