Bush et al no agents of God
published: Friday | March 28, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

REGARDING THE Reverend Newton Gabbidon's letter "The Invisible Hand at Work." I can only offer a comment from a friend of mine from Uganda, upon observing a recent uprising in Palestine. "Thank God it's them because that could have been us." Her comments on the surface may cause consternation until you realise that, according to my friend, when the powers that be sat down to discuss the establishment of a "homeland" for the Jews, Uganda was the first place selected. King George objected to that proposal leading to Palestine as the next best choice.

While Christians around the world rejoiced as they saw this establishment of a Jewish state as a sure fulfilment of prophecy, one wonders why if this was truly the hand of God wasn't there a more direct route to the selection of a "promised land." To my mind there is much we don't know or understand and to make pronouncements about God's plans when so much deception abounds is a dangerous premise. Or as my mom used to say "even the devil knows how to quote Scriptures."

Personally, I have read the end of the book and in Revelations Chapter 18, the fall of the "great city" where "all the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury" seems an apt description of the only superpower in the world today.

Finally, seeing George Bush and his cohorts as agents of God when they can't even wait until the bodies of the soldiers and others killed in this war "get cold" before they start issuing contracts to rebuild Iraq, is one I would rather not even consider.

I am etc.,
