Flames Nightclub opens on Mannings Hill Road
published: Monday | March 17, 2003

By Mel Cooke, Freelance Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE LATEST addition to Kingston's after-dark entertainment, the Flames Nightclub, opened on Saturday night at 66 Mannings Hill Road, St. Andrew.

With the renowned oldies-oriented Venus providing the music for Flames' coming out party, the more mature audience turned out for the opening night. One couple had the dance floor and Just Don't Want To Be Lonely all to themselves when The Gleaner passed through at some minutes after midnight.

They took full advantage of the opportunity, dancing very close together and generating some heat of their own.

The Flames Nightclub is certainly not an oldies venue, however, as starting this Saturday there will be a weekly teen jam, which will begin in the day and run into the night. The teen jam will feature a sound system or performers each week.

Although the regular schedule is still being worked out, the Flames Nightclub's operators said that two or three nights a week will be geared toward the more mature audience, while the more hip will have the rest of the days all to themselves.

In addition, on Tuesdays and Thursdays there are regular domino games.

Flames is open seven days a week, from 8:00 p.m. until ...

When The Gleaner made the trek upstairs 66 Mannings Hill Road on Saturday night, we were greeted by a pleasant roof-top setting, with a dance floor open to an almost full moon. A raised area with a curved railing will serve as a decent stage, with clean bathrooms on that side of the club.

Moving away from the dance floor, one goes to the bar area, with a pool table to the left. The bar was very busy and a young lady tried , unsuccessfully, to put her balls away at the pool table.

Going through the door to the rear of the pool area, The Gleaner came to the part of the Flames Nightclub which was visible from Mannings Hill Road the balcony, where the tables were occupied with people playing dominoes and having a nibble or sip.

The Flames Nightclub also sported a pleasantly surprising amount of greenery, with shrubbery along the side of the balcony area.

The Beat Goes On ushered The Gleaner out of the Flames Nightclub on its official opening night.
