Police parade opens Hillary Session in St Mary
published: Wednesday | March 12, 2003

PORT MARIA:

A PARADE of a detachment of police who marched from the Port Maria Police Station to the courthouse, lead by the Special Constabulary Force Band, marked the opening of the Hillary Session of the St. Mary Circuit Court on Monday.

The guard of honour was inspected by trial judge, His Honour Mr. Justice Karl Harrison, accompanied by Custos A.A. Pottinger.

A listing of 34 cases will be heard over a two week period with murder and rape heading the list, having seven cases each for hearing. Carnal abuse, 6, and illegal possession of firearm, 6. Three persons are charged with manslaughter, while one is charged with concealment of birth. Two are listed for robbery with aggravation and felonious wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm are one each.

Justice Harrison, in his opening remarks, expressed concern that 50 per cent of the cases are sexual offenses. He instructed the jurors fully on the legal procedures and their duties during the trial. He warned them not to be intimidated, but listen carefully and use their common sense.

"They are judges of the fact," he said, "and if there is any disagreement with the foreman, they should bring the matter to his attention."

He also reminded them that heavy fines will be imposed on them if they do not attend court and stay away without a reasonable excuse. He requested their commitment to work closely with him.

The judge was welcomed to the parish by attorney-at-law, Dale Marsh, on behalf of his colleagues, who promised to co-operate with him.
