Clinical depression occurs in:

  • Up to 40 per cent of patients seen by physicians
  • 24 to 46 per cent of hospital inpatients with medical illness
  • six to 17 per cent of the general population but often depression goes undetected.

Treatment of depressed patients

Depression is treated with a combination of antidepressants medication and/or psychotherapy. Commonly-used anti-depressants are:

  • Tricyclics
  • Heterocyclics
  • M.A.O. Inhibitors
  • S.S.R.I. (Selective Serotonin Inhibitors) - Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac.
