Blessed with warmth
published: Friday | March 7, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

HAVE YOU ever thought of how blessed you are in Jamaica? The weather is so fine... Well, here in Canada, it's like living in your freezer for six months. At present, where I am, the temperature is minus 24 Celsius. But the windchill makes it feel like minus 36C... This means your skin could burst and be subject to frost bites in five minutes.

Going on the road, if you are that foolish, you feel as if someone using a knife to cut you repeatedly in your face... The ear feels as if someone uses a pair of scissors to slice it over and over again. Even with the best winter clothing, your body feels like the bones are rattling inside of you.

Since the end of October, there is hardly a day in which the temperature is not below zero Celsius... Don't let the weather forecast on the TV fool you. That shows the maximum for the day... That might just be for a few minutes. Then the minimum or near minimum is usually about 10 degrees Celsius colder. Add to that the windchill factor could be another 10 or so colder... This means the freezer inside my kitchen is warmer than outside the house.

God bless Jamaica.

I am etc.,
