Tough task for Chai Chong
published: Friday | February 21, 2003

Samuda and Smith

FORMER national team captain and sponsor of the Color Solutions Classic, Wayne Chai Chong, is in for a struggle if he is to hold on to his title in the men's section of this year's event which tees off tomorrow at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club.

This year's format differs from previous ones where players competed in handicap flights rather than categories.

This year the competitors will tee off in the categories of men, seniors, superseniors, ladies, senior ladies and juniors for gross and nett prizes.

Chai Chong, who admitted he has not played much golf this year, outplayed a field of his peers to walk away with top honours in last year's tournament.

Already gearing up for the 2003 event are Owen Samuda, who has been unbeatable over the past 24 months, the ever consistent John Smith, Jason Garbutt, Gifford Wilmot and George Huge, fresh from his recent victory in the Jamaica Match Play qualifying round.

Also in the line-up for the men's title is professional player turned amateur Garnett Wright, who plays out of New York and will definitely be a "contender" from the start.

The top senior finisher last year, Dennis Atkinson, will be taking on a very competitive field of keen opponents including Fred Sutherland - recent senior winner in the Match Play qualifying round, Bill Telling, Hansel Williams and Hamar Dayes.

The supersenior's section will also prove to be a "heavy-weight" division with the likes of Jamaica Match Play Champion, Cleo Taylor, Carl Welsh, Mike Vicens and Michael Bachstetz among others matching skills.

Defending ladies champion, Jodi Munn will be off the island and the determined Maggie Lyn should not have any obstacles in claiming the trophy. The junior section will also see keen competitors including National representatives Sean Green, Matthew Lee and Dillon Rowe. The first tee time on Saturday, February 22, is 8:00 a.m.
