THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM amazed at all the things intelligent people in Jamaica said about us in The Gleaner article published on January 19. They said them without checking on the facts, most of which are so wrong... so very, very wrong.
My family and I are pleased to share with you the great blessings, joy, love and happiness that we gain from day to day as we live the Gospel of Jesus Christ as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are blessed beyond expression, in spite of all the opposition that faces us.
I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) for 21 years. I raised four sons and one daughter in this wonderful faith. My children are wonderful. They love the Lord, they love their country and always respect the law of the land.
It is time to stop the killing, stop the crime, be respectful to parents and to each other. It is time to let God influence your life... not just talk about Jesus and do nothing. That is what our church teaches. Our 12th Article of Faith says, "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, magistrates and in honouring, obeying and sustaining the law."
My strongest belief as a Latter-day Saint mother is that we the church have the answer to crime and violence, hate, and disrespect... you name it. We believe that teaching our children correct principles will help them to govern their lives. This is what every parent should be teaching their children.
As a Latter-day Saint woman, I can strongly say to our Jamaican people that we believe in a good and sound education. Only a child who is mentally ill does not get an education. We believe that the knowledge we gain here in this life is the only thing we will take with us on the resurrection day... so we make good use of our time.
Have you ever wondered how our "Mormon" children manage in our Jamaican schools? Find them, and any of them will tell you what happens in school to cause their pain and suffering. It happens often and for many reasons.
About the brainwashing of our missionaries... Our children do not give up on their education to go on a mission. As soon as their mission is over, which is 18 to 24 months, they return to school, college, or university. When they come back to study they do it better and get better grades. They know how to work. These are facts. Check it out!
To my fellow Jamaicans, be a little more curious and read the Book of Mormon. It is a second witness for Jesus Christ. Be a little more curious and listen to the missionaries, a lot of them are Jamaican! Be a little more curious and come and see for yourself how we worship on Sundays. Your curiosity will be good for you.
I am, etc.,
