THE EDITOR, Sir:ON AND before October 16, I was urged to log on to progress as I would be left behind. I did not. Apparently I am now paying for the sins of not doing so. My salary has remained stagnant while the dollar itself has gone up or down depending on how you look at it.
I am one of the many teachers who have to keep extra lessons to supplement my living expenses, but every now and then there seems to be a furore over how 'tief' or expensive teachers are in relation to lessons. If I don't do this, believe me, dry grass and leaves will soon be too expensive for me to afford.
I am not privileged to be a member of the 103 per cent club, but with the nature of my job the Government of progress sees it fit to make me a permanent member of the three per cent club. Why? Only God knows. With inflation up over seven per cent I don't see what the offer they are giving me is helping. Education was the jewel in the crown of everyone's promise, yet to improve the standard of living of those who deliver it is so hard to do.
It is so ironic that many of those in government were taught by teachers, the same ones they refuse to give a better offer. Was it some poor treatment that they received in the past? Or is it that you just don't care? I'll never know. But what I do know is that we need help, help us by making life a bit more bearable as three per cent is a far cry from the promised progress.
I am etc.,
