Jamaican photographers winbig
published: Sunday | February 9, 2003

By Howard Moo Young, Contributor

IN MARCH 2002, Kodak through its local distributors for professional products Amalgamated Distributors Ltd. announced the launch of the 2003 Kodak Professional Caribbean Calendar Contest.

The competition was open to all photographers in Jamaica and the Caribbean by purchasing a required amount of film or equipment. The photographs should depict any aspect of life in the Caribbean and should be exposed on any Kodak professional film. The initial response to the competition was not overwhelming, but interest grew towards the closing date as a total of 14 Jamaican photographers submitted 42 entries.

Pictures from the four winning Jamaican photographers, Arlene Brown, Jill Roberts, Andrew Smith and Tony Wong were chosen to represent nine months of the year. The remaining three images came from Aruba and the Bahamas. The four photographers are all members of the Photography Club of Jamaica, including the President, Tony Wong.

The calendar is distributed in the Caribbean through Kodak Distributors and Internationally through Kodak Houses. The design of the calendar is quite unique and is excellently produced and printed on premium stock. An even more exciting competition for the 2004 calendar, either for the Caribbean or Jamaica alone will be announced soon. Requests for viewing of the 2003 calendar can be made at Amalgamated Distributors Ltd. on Constant Spring Road. To view the winning photographs you can visit the Caribbean Contest Gallery on the Kodak Web site www.2003caribbean calendar.com

Photo enthusiasts can look forward to a series of photography workshops in early 2003 to be sponsored by Kodak.
