THE EDITOR, Sir:
THANK YOU for the opportunity to respond to Miss Philpotts' letter to the Editor published in The Gleaner on Friday, January 10, 2003.
We noted the writer's concerns re alcohol consumption by minors and in particular Smirnoff Ice. We also noted her consternation that a parent would permit a 14-year-old minor to attend Smirnoff Experience.
We wish your readers to know that we share many of Miss Phillpott's views, and we would not want to miss this opportunity to state very clearly Red Stripe's own position on the issues she raised.
At Red Stripe, we ruthlessly pursue our mission to be a good corporate citizen, and as such maintain an uncompromising position on the responsible marketing and sale of our brands.
In the case of Smirnoff Ice, we wish to advise that it has the same level of alcohol as a beer, and should not be consumed by minors, likewise Smirnoff Experience is a fun event for adults.
At all Smirnoff Experience events signs are posted at ticket booths and at the entrance to the venues specifically stating that no one under the legal drinking age of 18 years is allowed to attend the event.
As a good corporate citizen, Red Stripe is mindful of our duty to adopt a responsible approach to the use of alcohol, and to safeguard the interest of minors, and we welcome any additional support which the public, the authorities and our consumers can provide.
Thank you for the opportunity to state our position and to remind the public that we promote and advocate responsible drinking.
I am, etc.,
GRACE SILVERA
