THE EDITOR, Sir:
It was with disgust and alarm that I heard via the electronic and read in the printed media that a 60-year-old bus driver was followed, stabbed and eventually died because he refused to participate in the demonstrations planned by taxi operators. This man had done no wrong and was upholding the dignity of working by driving a public passenger vehicle to provide for his family.
Mr. Editor, the crimes that have been perpetrated by persons protesting against the fines for offences under the Road Traffic Act should not go unpunished. Let me remind your readers that if you do not commit an offence you cannot be prosecuted, therefore these fines which I think should be thrice the amount could not penalise you.
There is too much indiscipline by drivers and in particular the robot drivers along the Junction main road, about which I can speak with authority as I see them everyday during my travel from my district to Kingston where I work.
What is even more alarming about the recent protest, is the political flavour that it took. Luckily for this section of St. Mary, the greater majority do not take bribes and handouts from so-called politicians seeking political power. I appeal to all Jamaicans, let us not be bribed or coerced by politicians of any stripe, party or affiliation to destroy our country for their own political ambitions.
Law and order must prevail. Let us play our part and condemn indiscipline wherever it is practised in this land of ours.
I am, etc.,
