THE CIGARETTE Company of Jamaica will be making the posts of about 15 of its staff redundant at the end of this month as part of a restructuring programme to increase efficiency at the Twickenham Park, Spanish Town, St. Catherine plant.
Bill Telling, chief executive officer of the Carreras Group, said the restructuring programme was also being made to keep costs in line.
The move came against the background of a decision taken by the company some time ago to undertake a continuous revision of the efficiency of the business, and a subsequent determination that there was overstaffing in some areas. In some cases, more than one person was undertaking tasks which could be comfortably done by one person, Mr. Telling said.
About 10-12 per cent of the staff, drawn from various areas in the company, will be affected by the move, Mr. Telling said. He also said that as part of the restructuring process, all
the sales staff have been
offered positions as permanent
employees. The upcoming staff cuts and other matters relating to the restructuring of the company were communicated to workers during a meeting with general manager Michael Bernard on Monday.
The Cigarette Company of Jamaica is the principal operating subsidiary of the Carreras Group.
